Art Donation Process

Museum Exchange’s end-to-end service connects donors with an expansive network of leading museums, hospitals, universities, and other nonprofit organizations across North America and manages every step of the donation process—all online.

1. Upload Your Art

Enter all basic artwork information through an easy-to-use interface. Specify any restrictions or preferences for your art donation. Our team of art donation experts will review the submission within 7 days and approve it for the next eligible donation cycle for either our museum or healthcare & education networks.

2. Offer Your Art

List your art for donation in one of our catalogues where it will be seen by our network of nonprofit organizations. Artworks will be offered for 90 days in our museum catalogue; or up to 180 days in our healthcare & education catalogue. During this time, institutions interested in your art donation will submit proposals explaining how your art would enhance their collection and impact their community.

3. Match with An Institution

Review proposals submitted by interested nonprofit organizations and select a recipient for your art donation within 15 days from the close of the cycle. There is no obligation to proceed with the art donation if the proposals received are unsatisfactory.

4. Appraise Your Art

Approve the appointment of a qualified art appraiser from our trusted network of third party qualified art appraisers (optional). An appraisal report will be completed for your review in advance of finalizing the art donation.

5. Donate Your Art

Complete the art donation process with the nonprofit organization of your choice, guided by our digital interface. Our team of art donation experts will assist you every step of the way. Sign donation documents electronically, eliminating the need for physical paperwork.

6. Receive Your Documents

Pay your invoice and receive a final package via mail or email containing a signed IRS Form 8283, art appraisal, and deed of gift. You’re now ready to file your taxes.

Still deciding if donating is right for you?

Valuation Estimate Reports

Are you considering donating your art but first want to know what it’s worth? Our appraiser partners offer Valuation Estimate Reports (VERs) for a flat rate fee of $300 per artwork. These reports provide a guaranteed value range that a subsequent appraisal would fall within. Should you proceed with the donation and appraisal, the fee of the VER is deducted against the future appraisal fee.
