About the Artist
Karen Carson (b. 1943, Corvallis, OR) earned her MFA from UCLA in 1971 and has been an influential figure in the Los Angeles art scene ever since, though she now splits her time between California and Big Timber, Montana. Carson is known for her innovative and experimental approach, consistently pushing her work in new directions, independent of art world trends. Her early works, such as this zipper painting, are often associated with post-minimalism and are less recognized than they deserve, given their groundbreaking combination of geometric abstraction and flexibility. The zippers allow the artwork to be displayed in various configurations, revealing different compositional possibilities.
