About the Artist
Sam Gilliam (1933-2022) was an American artist associated with the Washington Color School, known for his innovative approach to abstract art. Gilliam is recognized for his use of unstretched, draped canvases, which challenged the traditional boundaries of painting by introducing three-dimensionality to the medium.
